Online Teaching Certicifation
Objective
The Faculty Center for Teaching, Learning & Scholarship manages the Online Teaching Certification program, created to ensure high-quality virtual learning delivery for students.
Skills
The program has two levels. In Level 1, participants complete the SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules training, which covers the skills needed to use Brightspace. In Level 2, participants develop pedagogy skills necessary to deliver effective virtual instruction.
Training Requirements
Faculty and staff who want to teach online are required to complete the following steps. Use this checklist to guide completion of requirements:
All faculty teaching online will need to complete the SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules. This course can be accessed through mylearning.oneonta.edu.
When you first log in, you will see the link to the SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules in the “My Courses” area. There are a total of 9 modules with a 5-question quiz at the end of each module. To complete the certificate, you will need to score 100% on all 9 modules.
Once you have finished the modules, you can access your certificate by clicking on Course Activities (at the top of the page) and then selecting Awards. You can then print your certificate as proof of completion.
Depending on your comfort with the course materials, this course will take approximately 4-8 hours to complete.
This training is a fully online course that lasts 4 weeks. During this training, faculty will learn best practices for teaching online and quality online design, as well as gain skills in creating accessible documents and planning interactive learning.
Within 30 days after the successful completion of both Levels of training, the Office of Academic Programs reviews the training completion list and updates Banner to indicate the faculty who have completed both trainings and are thus eligible to deliver online courses. Due to upgrades, technology advancements, and new compliance laws, faculty are encouraged to take a refresher on this training every 2-3 years.

How to Register for Training
Level 1 is asynchronous, can be completed at any time, and can be located within Brightspace. Teaching faculty are automatically enrolled.
Level 2 trainings are offered several times a year. Upcoming trainings are posted in the Oneonta Bulletin and on Campus Connection.
For one-on-one support and training, submit a request to the Service Desk and one of the Faculty Center staff will contact you.
