Accessible Pedagogy Community of Practice

Faculty and staff interested in developing and sharing strategies for accessible pedagogy have been gathering over the past few semesters to talk about inclusive teaching. Convened by Matthew Unangst, PhD (Assistant Professor, History, and OEI Faculty Fellow), the group has been meeting monthly to explore resources, discuss existing policies, and prepare for changes related to the Americans with Disabilities Act Title II regulations.

In October, community members met in Milne Library’s computer lab to get to know Brightspace’s Ally feature, which supports instructors in posting accessible documents online. Instructional Designer Tera Doty-Blance demonstrated how to navigate the tool’s features to make a PDF or Word document accessible.

Upcoming meetings will focus on a new book, Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism, by Robert Chapman. In the past, the group read and discussed Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement, by Ashley Shew.
